The Design Process of Every Piece – From Wood Cutting to Polishing

1. Wood Selection & Cutting

Process:
Selecting high-quality, sustainable Mysore rosewood from ethical sources is the first step. The wood is then cut into appropriate sizes depending on the furniture or design piece.

2. Seasoning the Wood

Process:
After cutting, the wood is left to season or dry. This process can take weeks or months, depending on the climate. Seasoning prevents the wood from warping and ensures it remains durable.

3. Outlining the Design

Process:
Once the wood is seasoned, the design is carefully outlined onto the wooden surface. This can be a traditional inlay design, floral motifs, or custom patterns inspired by Indian culture.

4. Cutting & Shaping the Wood

Process:
After the design is outlined, artisans cut and shape the wood to form the base structure of the furniture. This involves intricate work to ensure the perfect shape and size.

5. Marking for Inlay Work

Process:
Next, artisans mark areas where the inlay work will be done. This involves carefully measuring and preparing the surface to ensure that the inlay pieces fit perfectly.

6. Inlaying the Design

Process:
The intricate process of inlaying involves embedding materials such as ivory, mother of pearl, metal, or different types of wood into the surface. Each piece is delicately placed into the carved-out design.

7. Engraving & Detailing

Process:
For pieces that require engraving, artisans use hand tools to carve out additional details, enhancing the design and adding depth to the inlay work.

8. Sanding & Smoothing

Process:
After engraving and inlaying, the wood is sanded down to ensure a smooth surface. This process is critical for the overall finish and feel of the furniture.

9. Polishing

Process:
The final step involves polishing the wood to bring out its natural beauty and enhance the inlay work. This process can involve multiple layers of polish, each applied by hand to achieve a lustrous finish.
